The government has been charged by the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) with allowing the Ghana Railway Authority to operationalize railway lines in Accra in order to generate income for the country’s growth.

During an investigation of several projects partially supported with oil money in the Greater Accra Region, the committee came to this conclusion.

According to PIAC, the delay in putting the finished rail tracks into service will cause the train stations and lines to deteriorate, increasing the expense of refurbishment for the country.

In a press conference, PIAC Vice-Chairman Nasir Alfa Mohammed stated that project engineers have informed the committee that some “fixing” is necessary before the lines can be operationalized.

Nasir Mohammed said, “even though the rail lines in Accra are equally completed like those in Takoradi, those in Accra are not being used while those in Takoradi are already being used and that we think is not appropriate”.

He urged the government to strengthen the railways’ company and “resolve all matters holding the company from operationalizing the rail lines in Accra because as we are not using it, wear and tear will be sitting in and we will have to spend more to restore the lines to their original state”.

Nasir Mohammed also called for a sustainable maintenance regime to ensure that the rail lines rake in the needed revenue from their operations.
