Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Tuesday visited the province where at least 84 people were killed in a 62-magnitude earthquake last week.
Joko flew to the West Sulawesi provincial capital of Mamuju, the area worst-hit by Friday’s earthquake, after inspecting flood-hit areas in South Kalimantan province, where 15 people have been killed.
“I’ve seen for myself collapsed government buildings and homes in Mamuju,” Joko told reporters.
“I’ve come here to ensure that rescue work and assistance given to the people are managed well,” he said.
He said the government would give up to 50 million rupiah (3,563 US dollars) to those whose homes were damaged.
The National Disaster Management Agency said 73 people were killed in Mamuju, and 11 in Majene, a district near the epicentre of the quake.
Nearly 20,000 people were displaced as a result of the quake and more than 700 people were injured, it said.
The agency said it had distributed isolation tents to areas affected by the temblor, to prevent the transmission of Covid-19.
