Bafana Bafana are set to square off with the Black Stars in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Thursday.
First Meeting
South Africa edged out Ghana 2-1 in the Four Nations Cup match which was played at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria in November 1994. Bafana Bafana’s two goals were netted by Doctor Khumalo and Marks Maponyane, while Frank Amankwah grabbed the Black Stars’ consolation goal.
Another Win For Bafana
Bafana secured their second successive win against the Black Stars when they claimed a 3-0 win in the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final match in January 1996. John Moshoeu was in top form as he grabbed a brace and Shaun Bartlett scored the other goal at the iconic FNB Stadium.
Bafana Maintain Dominance
Bafana maintained their unbeaten record against the Black Stars by winning 1-0 in the 2000 Afcon quarter-final match at Asokwa Stadium in February 2000. The only goal of the match was netted by the hard-running Siyabonga Nomvethe’s goal in Kumasi, Ghana.
Draw In Mali
A goalless stalemate then followed in the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations Group B match at Stade Amary Daou in Mali in January 2002. The Black Stars were able to contain Benni McCarthy, who was one of the best African strikers at the time.
Maiden Win For Black Stars
Ghana finally recorded their maiden win over Bafana at Bara Yara Stadium in the 2006 Fifa World Cup qualifier in June 2004. Three goals by Sulley Muntari and Stephen Appiah (brace) inspired the Black Stars to a famous 3-0 win over South Africa in Kumasi.
Black Stars Complete Double
Ghana completed a double over South Africa in the 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign when they won 2-0 in June 2005. Matthew Amoah and Michael Essien hit the back of the net for the Black Stars at FNB Stadium.
Bafana Get Their Revenge
Bafana got their revenge over the Black Stars in an international friendly match in October 2008. Benni McCarthy and Bernard Parker netted for Bafana, while Yaw Antwi netted for the visitors at Free State Stadium.
Mphela Slays Black Stars
The two teams met again in an international friendly match which Bafana won 1-0 in August 2010. Katlego Mphela was the hero when he scored the only goal of the game at FNB Stadium.
Third Win For Black Stars
The Black Stars got their third win over Bafana in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations Group C match at Estadio de Mongomo in January 2025. John Boye and Andre Ayew netted to hand Ghana a 2-1 victory with Mandla Masango scoring for the Southern Africans in Equatorial Guinea.
Patosi Rescues Bafana
The next encounter between the two former African champions ended 1-1 in a friendly game at Moses Mabhida Stadium in October 2016. Mubarak Wakaso opened the scoring for Ghana, while Bafana midfielder Ayanda Patosi equalised in Durban.
Draw In Dubai
The Black Stars and Bafana met in a friendly match ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in June 2019. The two teams played to a 0-0 draw at Police Officers Club Stadium in Dubai with Richard Ofori keeping a clean sheet.
Black Stars Humble Bafana
The last meeting between Ghana and South Africa took place in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in November 2019. The match ended in a 2-0 victory in favour of the Black Stars at Cape Coast Sports Stadium in Ghana.
Thirteenth Meeting Looming
The 13th meeting between the two African giants is set to take place at FNB Stadium on Thursday. Bafana have beaten the Black Stars five times and lost on four occasions, with three matches drawn.
