The best defence against unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases is abstinence, hence adolescents have been urged to refrain from sexual activity.

All protection measures have their own drawbacks, according to Mr. Reginald Ankrah, a social welfare development officer of the Tema Metropolitan Social Welfare and Community Development Office, who gave the encouragement.

He made this statement during a seminar on sexual and reproductive health education that his organisation, in partnership with the YAH-Salem Foundation, organised under the banner “Mental Health is a Universal Human Right.”

Adolescence, according to him, is not the time to experiment with sex because it can have serious negative effects on both boys and girls, especially in terms of their education and future employment.
