Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah, Member of Parliament for Tema West, has encouraged Ghanaians who do not want to pay the 1.75 e-levy to quit using Mobile Money (MoMo).
He described the propanganda against the e-levy as “nauseating” since it is motivated by political expediency. “No human being or no individual loves to pay tax,” he told TV3’s Komla Klutse in a Parliament interview on Wednesday December 8, “but it is a recognized reality that taxes are normally appalled by people who are supposed to pay them.”

“So, what’s going on is very understandable. However, I believe it is very regrettable that it has been utilized to score political points or that it is being done for political expediency.
“I will tell you something, I have always been saying that the MoMo tax is not a compulsory tax, you only pay when you use it. If you don’t use it you don’t pay so for me, there is no way any other procedure for making payments is going to equal MoMo.
“Right now, what we’re arguing is that the tax is aimed at people who can afford it, not those who are on the dole.” If you are receiving, it is acceptable to negotiate with the person who has gone to the bank to borrow money and act as a MoMo agent, paying money out; otherwise, keep the money on your phone and pay nothing.
“Even if I stand here and tell them that if they don’t like paying or using MoMo, I assure them that using MoMo will be much less expensive. If you think using MoMo is difficult or expensive, you should try it out for yourself.”
