Just over a year since the novel coronavirus was discovered in Wuhan, China, the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases around the world surpassed 100 million on Tuesday, as countries race to vaccinate their populations from the deadly pathogen.
Data from Johns Hopkins University shows the U.S. has reported more than 25 million infections since the pandemic began, and a death toll of over 422,000. The U.S. leads the world in both infections and deaths, though health experts say the true count is hard to know since each country has different testing capacities and reporting protocols to track the spread of the virus.
India and Brazil follow the U.S. in reported caseloads, with 10.6 million and 8.8 million infections, respectively.
The spread of the virus in the U.S. increased dramatically in the fall, as the daily number of confirmed cases first exceeded 100,000 per day and in late November broke the 200,000 mark. The most recent seven-day average stood at 170,000 new cases in the country, down from a record 249,000 earlier this month.
Globally, more than half a million new cases were recorded nearly each day since late October of last year, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of Johns Hopkins University data.
More than 2.14 million deaths from the virus have been recorded world-wide since the pandemic began. Though the true toll is likely far worse.
